somehow she had managed to allocate a few of her hours toward venturing into the depths of the safari. cait had been working nearby and had ultimately purchased a ticket on a whim, deciding to invest toward acquiring another companion or two. she found nothing inherently wrong with adding onto her already large family, after all. 

"the weather's pretty good today," she remarked, glancing skyward.

cait had only just entered the vast park, her steps unhurried as she mounted a regularly trodden upon path that was composed entirely of flatten earth and bordered by untrimmed grasses. there was a natural silence that held this place despite it being a controlled environment, the distant calls of flying-types and the rustling of foliage the only thing which reached her ears. 

"let's just hope it lasts."

the young woman appeared fairly confident as she pressed onward, hopeful that she'd encounter creatures that she'd soon introduce to her gym and its inhabitants by the day's end. 

'home isn't too far off. i should be back by tonight if i hurry.'

cait wasn't particularly familiar with the chansey line despite stormy being in possession of one. but they were an easily recognizable lot, their body resembling that of an egg due to its oval shape. 

'chansey's one of the pokemon the safari advertised.' 

yet she wasn't at all interested in acquiring one despite their impressive bulk. she left it be as it glanced in her direction and did nothing else, the creature appearing to be a combination of unimpressed and uninterested.

'i keep forgetting how docile some of these pokemon are.'

she supposed that they had grown acclimated to  the sight of humans a good while ago - especially since trainers frequented their  areas so often.

'it doesn't look like a bad place to live,' she thought, her gaze wandering. 'spacious and there's likely plenty to eat.'

had she not already been in possession of her beautiful exeggutor, she would have been utterly enraptured by the cluster of exeggcute that boasted a strange pigmentation. 

'a shiny, then?'

cait observed them with a look of interest before moving past them as they idled away. she had been tempted - but the girl had decided to invest her limited resources and time elsewhere. 

'what i'm looking for is out here somewhere,' she thought. 

there was still quite a bit of plain left before the path branched out. she'd likely go back into the forest - which was a place she had frequented during her previous trip in the safari. 

"i had a lot of good luck in there," she murmured.

the smeargle was in the midst of leaving its painted mark upon a tree when cait had happened upon it. initially it offered her a  glance before returning to its work, the early stages of its personal project surprisingly intricate as it effectively wielded the very tip of its paintbrush. the young woman slowed to a halt to observe its work, her expression that betrayed a mildly impressed state of mind soon transitioning into that of astonishment. 

'that's actually pretty good,' she thought.

the pokemon - once it had completed its project - turned to peer curiously in her direction. it was likely trying to gauge her expression before it gave a little smirk, an arrogant gleam in its eye as cait continued to eye its work. 

"it's lovely," she said.

smeargle nodded in agreement, visibly pleased by her awe. 

"i'm in need of a good painter," she continued, conversationally. "at my gym, i mean. do you mind helping me out, smeargle?" 

the pokemon considered her for a moment - and she feared outright rejection. but it soon nodded in agreement and remained idle as she produced a capsule and triggered the capture mechanism.

there was something about bunnelby that drew cait in - but she surmised it was due to their distinctively soft appearance that effectively disguised their potential as proficient fighters. 

"c'mere."

cait had crouched low the moment she was within sight of one, the creature likely foraging for a meal upon discovery. it raised itself upon its hind legs, a hint of weariness causing its features to scrunch up as it eyed the green-haired woman.

"i've got something for you."

the freckle-faced female produced a cube-like snack, a similar treat having been previously used to entice the sylveon she acquired from here. this one was flavored differently due to it being made from a combination of fresh vegetables - grounded up lettuce and carrot serving as its primary ingredients. 

"treat," she said, speaking slowly. "it's a treat." 

cait gave it a toss and the pokemon offered it a little sniff before gobbling it up. it appeared satisfied with its taste and patiently waited for another, beginning to relax as the human continued to offer it edible morsels. 

"i'll give you more if you come with me." 

the pokemon blinked and cait initially feared that it'd fail to comprehend her request - but a subtle nod of its head soon soothed away her concerns.

togepi served as her primary target for this particular venture. it was a fairy-type, so it fit in well enough with the pokemon she often depended upon for her gym-sponsored battles. the one she discovered was very effectively concealed within a clump of long grasses and was very nearly missed by the woman. 

"hello, baby," she crooned.

the pokemon blinked and turned the entirety of its body toward her, visibly bemused by the sight of the woman. cait once again crouched to address the tiny creature, her broad smile exuding a pleasant combination of warmth and excitement as she purred out her next words.  

"aren't you the cutest thing i've seen." 

togepi continued to peer at her before it toddled forward, the babe curious enough to throw caution to the wind in favor of inspecting the woman. 

'it looks pretty young. i wonder if i'm one of the first humans it's ever been in direct contact with.' 

cait produced a treat - this particular edible comparatively sweet and boasting a light pink color - and surrendered it to the creature. it appeared pleased enough by the snack and would soon venture closer, emboldened as it sought to claim another treat for itself. 

"you're adorable," cait crooned. "c'mere." 

it released a soft titter as it was swept up in the woman's arms, the girl raising it high as it happily wiggled its little arms. 

"i think i'll take you along with me, baby."

the togepi had only been in her arms for a few moments before another one marched up to her, the look upon its face one of immense displeasure.

"another one?"

her togepi released a noise that was likely one of greeting, her tiny hand waving as she peered down at the strange little male.

'strange?'

cait blinked and squinted down at the pokemon. yes - there was indeed something aesthetically off about the egg-shaped creature. and the young woman found herself comparing the two, raising the female up for inspection as her gaze flitted between her and her male counterpart. 

"oh." 

it was difficult to tell at first glance but cait eventually identified the differences between the two. 

"you bear the mark of latias, little girl," she remarked, relying upon her knowledge of religious texts. "and you - your most prominent feature is latios's mark."

it was uncommon knowledge but not uncommon enough for her not to recall it after searching her memories. 

"are you two related? is this your sister, maybe?"  

cait laughed quietly and appeared pleased - considering the encounter to be a lucky one. 

"you're free to come along, then. i have just enough room to accommodate the both of you." 

the offer alone wasn't enough to convince the shiny togepi, but she eventually lured him in - tempting him with both a fair amount of treats and his sister who appeared to be at ease. 

'that'll be my last safari ball,' she thought. 'money well-spent if i do say so myself.'
